  • Merrick Lex Berman

    Web Service Manager & GIS Specialist

    Merrick Lex Berman manages Chinese and Japanese geographic information projects such as CHGIS, the Skinner Archive,  ChinaMap, and JapanMap. He studied Asian Languages and GeoSciences at UMASS - Amherst and was a Fulbright Scholar at Academia Sinica (Taipei) in Chinese Geography.

  • Peter K. Bol

    Founding Director

    Peter Bol is the Vice Provost for Advances in Learning and the Charles H. Carswell Professor in East Asian Languages and Civilizations. He led Harvard’s university-wide effort to establish support for geospatial analysis in teaching and research. In 2005 he was named the first director of the Center for Geographic Analysis and served till September of 2014.

  • Wendy Guan

    Executive Director

    Wendy is the Executive Director who manages daily operations of the CGA. She came to Harvard in 2006 as the Director of GIS Research Services for the newly established Center. Prior to that, she managed professional services at a GIS consulting firm in Washington; headed the geospatial information technology department for a multinational forestry corporation; and supervised GIS teams in a Florida government agency. Wendy has a Ph.D. in ecology and GIS; a M.A. and M.S.

  • Jeff Blossom

    GIS Service Manager

    Jeff joined the Center for Geographic Analysis at Harvard in 2007 as a Senior GIS Specialist, and became the GIS Service Manager in 2016. He has experience working in the GIS industry as a technician, analyst, developer, manager, and educator. Jeff earned an M.A. in Geography from the University of Denver in 2002, and a B.S. from Willamette University (OR) in 1995. Jeff's work experience includes GIS jobs at  the Los Alamos National Laboratory, New Mexico, the U.S.G.S.

  • Ben Lewis

    Geospatial Technology Manager

    Ben manages a team that develops geospatial tools and platforms for researchers from a range of disciplines who need support in the following areas: social and scientific data harvesting, data enrichment, storage and retrieval of large datasets, geospatial analytics, machine learning, georeferencing, gazetteer development, spatio-temporal search, map visualization, web map service development, interoperability solutions, and portal development.

  • Josh Lieberman

    Senior Researcher

    Josh is a senior research scientist at CGA working on hydrographic ontologies and semantic applications for the U.S. National Map as part of the new Spatiotemporal Innovation Center. He also serves as a coordinating architect and initiative manager for the Open Geospatial Consortium and as a lecturer at the University of Maryland Baltimore County. Josh has a Ph.D. from the University of Washington, M.S. from the University of Oregon, and A.B.

  • Jason Ur


    Jason Ur is Director of the Center for Geographic Analysis and Professor of Archaeology in the Department of Anthropology.  He studies the origins and development of cities and empires in the Middle East and their landscape impacts, using satellite remote sensing, mobile GIS-based field survey, and geospatial analysis.  He has directed research projects in Syria, Turkey, and Iran.

  • Paolo Corti

    Geospatial Engineering Fellow

    Paolo Corti joined the Center for Geographic Analysis (CGA) in 2015 as Geospatial Engineering Fellow. He is an environmental engineer with past experiences as a geospatial analyst and developer for the EU Joint Research Center, the UN World Food Program, the Italian Government and Esri.

  • Devika Kakkar

    Geospatial Developer

    Devika is a geospatial developer at CGA. She is proficient in multiple programming languages such as Python, R, Java and C/C++. Since joining, she has worked on various projects that involved big data such as "Billion Object Platform" (BOP), a platform to support interactive exploration of billions of spatio-temporal objects and "National Water Model Prediction Analysis", which uses GPU-powered MapD database to interactively analyze big spatial data.

  • Jill Kelly

    Preceptor in Geospatial Analysis

    Jill Kelly is a classroom instructor for GIS in the Government Department, and co-instructor of the GIS Institute at the CGA. Her research focuses on the development and application of GIS and other spatial methods to study environmental phenomena.  Jill is a geospatial generalist with interests in morphology, areal aggregation, and cross-scale analysis.  Her current research involves the use of airborne lidar for spatially explicit estimates of forest biomass.
